SharePoint Files No Longer Show Up in "Recent"

I use Excel 64-bit 2016 at work and a couple weeks ago files that I load into Excel from SharePoint sites no longer shows up as "Recent". In other words I no longer see them as files I recently opened when I select File-->Open and view the list of Recent files. Our IT department suggested logging in to SharePoint before opening Excel but I see no change. Has anyone else experienced this and solved it?

Files I had previously pinned that are SharePoint files still show up and clicking them still opens those files. But nothing else can be pinned because none of them show as being opened.
