Hello everyone,

What are some of the obstacles you faced at first when you were still new at Excel?

I'm still new with excel and I have found it difficult to follow some of the instructions that were originally for Windows users since I have a Mac.
a problem that I recently faced was using the VLookup. it took me few more than a couple of tries till I figured it out.

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
most of the functions should work the same on a Mac - of course some things are not available at all , only on windows versions

VLOOKUP() should be the same - I used windows and excel for many many years and then in 2018 switched to Mac OSX

Some of the short cut keys are different - so command instead of control etc - But i dont think you use them much - but it maybe I'm so used to it now

its often difficult to learn a new product, but as soon as you use it regularly, it very quickly becomes easy

I guess the problems i had was with pivot tables , connection to external SQL databases and VBA
but to be honest a lot of things right at the start were difficult
I stated with a book called something like - learn excel in 14 days - i did do a course as well , which my company sent me on
I started using spreadsheet lotus 123 and a mainframe version called CALC (DEC) , in the 80's. Then I moved on to Excel in late 80's/early 90's along with Windows 3.1

then i had quite a few books , and if i didn't understand the function in 1 book would refer to a different author
used the Library a lot and took out a lot of books on Excel
These days you have forums like this

Just remember no such thing as a silly question , just sometimes they are easier to answer

So ask away on the forum, you have updated your profile so members will know you are on a mac OSX and also the version of windows you have 365 subscription

just as a guide , it would be worth getting XL2BB to work - its used by this forum

Please take some time to read below - and that way you should get answers much quicker if you follow the below

Note: Images are difficult to see , and also requires that I input all the data myself, which is very time consuming. So avoid using images unless showing things like error messages etc

try to provide
A SMALL sample spreadsheet, around 10-20 rows, would help a lot here, with all sensitive data removed, and expected results mocked up and manually entered, with a few notes of explanation.
Always manually put the expected results, that helps a lot , as then we can see if the solution we have provided helps

Have a play with this tool XL2BB - as mentioned below there is a test forum , to try it out.
MrExcel has a tool called “XL2BB” that lets you post samples of your data and will allow us to copy/paste your sample data into our Excel spreadsheets, saving a lot of time.

You can also test to see if it works ok, in the "Test Here" forum.

Finally
OR if you cannot get XL2BB to work, or have restrictions on your PC , then put the sample spreadsheet onto a share
I only tend to goto OneDrive, Dropbox or google docs , as I'm never certain of other random share sites and possible virus.
Please make sure you have a representative data sample and also that the data has been desensitised, remember this site is open to anyone with internet access to see - so any sensitive / personal data should be removed

good luck with your new venture into excel
