Shapes linked to single cells not updating

Hi,
I've been looking all over the place for a solution to this but have yet to find one the fixes my problem permanently. I'm new to the forum so please let me know if something is incorrect with my post.

I've created a dashboard on excel that mainly consists of tables and graphs; but I also have some Rectangle Shapes neatly placed to give a clean look to everything. I resorted to using shapes as with the way I setup the dashboard I need all my cells to conform to the same sizing and so can't really adjust row height to make it look cleaner.

The issue with these shapes is that while I've linked them to individual cells to display a value (such as =$A$1 or =Sheet1!$A$1), on opening the excel file they sometimes seem to break and wont work until I re-link them again (enter =$A$1) which is a huge pain as I've custom formatted the shapes and added text above/below values, which re-linking removes.

In searching for a solution I read that the shapes have "slow code" and update slowly, but in my case they seem to just never update.

Does anyone know of a way I can continue to use the shapes but have them actually update values when they change in the referenced cell? I can't find any permanent solutions to it.

Thanks!
