I found the formula for shading every other line, but I find that a bit hard to read. Is there a formula that will shade groups of rows? For instance, 3 unshaded, 3 shaded, 3 unshaded, etc. I am working with a simple list , so the formula can't be based on info contained in a cell. I'm purely going for readability here.

Thanks so much,
Sue

What did Pito Salas invent?
Pito Salas, working for Lotus, popularized what would become to be pivot tables. It was released as Lotus Improv in 1989.

Sue, try Conditionally formatting using this formula:

=ROUNDUP(ROW()/3,0)=EVEN(ROUNDUP(ROW()/3,0))

and copy formatting down.
