SHA1 UDF Working in one book, but not another...

Hi All

Looking for a little steer here as this currently has me beat.

A long time ago I needed to use SHA1 to encrypt a string, I Googled and found this UDF; http://squarecontrol.com/index.php/blog/sha1-hash-function-vba

It worked, I moved on.

It has come up again, so I got the old workbook, blew the cobwebs off it and copied and pasted it over to a brand new sparkly workbook.

Where it doesn't work - It gives me a #REF error.

At first I thought it might be a Add In or a Reference that was missing, but I've checked the original workbook and can't see anything obvious, they look the same to me at least.

The only other difference I can think of is originally it was an Excel 2003 formatted workbook and now I'm running Excel 2010

Another thing to note is that when I drag a formula with =SHA1(A1) down it becomes =SHA2(A2) in the new workbook, but it does recognise =SHA1() as a formula when I'm typing in the the little cell help box - This didn't happen in the Excel 2003 book, when I drag it, it stays as =SHA1(A2)

(I've also visited the http://splinter.com.au/blog website mentioned in the code but I can't find any mention of this UDF and there is no search function on the site :-/ )

Does this sound familiar to anyone? What am I missing? :-/

Excel Facts

Bring active cell back into view
Start at A1 and select to A9999 while writing a formula, you can't see A1 anymore. Press Ctrl+Backspace to bring active cell into view.
OK - I've worked this out, kind of.

I got the idea of just updating my old Workbook with the working UDF and bringing all the code and sheets over from the 2010 one, essentially using it as a template file.

To begin, I tried saving my original workbook as an Excel 2010 Macro Enabled workbook - And immediately got an error.

"The name, SHA1, either conflicts with a valid range reference or is invalid for Excel. The name has been replaced with _SHA1."

There appeared to be nothing different after I'd clicked OK though.

I closed the new 2010 Workbook down and reopened it, I noticed my formula was now using "_SHA1(A1)" - I then tried to use "_SHA1(A2)" but it came back with the =NAME? error...

I went back into the VBE and the function was still called "SHA1"

I renamed the function to SHAHASH(), so this part at the bottom;

It appears that Excel 2010 doesn't like "SHA1" for whatever reason.

So, I still don't know why it wasn't working - But at least I now have a solution, so, thought I'd leave it here in case it ever came in useful for anyone else as I spent entirely much time trying to solve this yesterday :-/

Hi, the reason is "SHA1" in XL2007+ is a cell reference.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Yup, it will be! - That never even crossed my mind when I was trying to think of the differences between 2003 and 2010!
