Sequential Number If

Hi there. So I have a list of name of students. The list needs to remain in a specified order. But, I need to assign a sequential number to each student in a class. Looking for advice on how to do this. The list will never be more than a few hundred lines long. Again, I need the sort order to stay as is. Names may change a fair amount, but the sort will not change. Looking for a formula to handle this.


Student Home Room Desired Result

Jack Zimmer 1
Shawn Parker 1
Emily Zimmer 2
Paul Johnson 1
Teddy Johnson 2
Mike Zimmer 3
