Security Bomb

I have placed a lot of time into customizing excel workbooks for my own use at the office.
I am worried that they will usurp my work and give it to others to use without regards for my efforts. So I would like to add a security bomb.

What I am envisioning is to have all the worksheets auto open and search for a file's existence or maybe data in a file and if it is not there then exit the workbook, or better delete itself.

I have never attempted anything like this so I am looking for input or similar ideas from those more knowledgeable than me.

Unless you reached a prior agreement with your employer, anything you build on company time belongs to the company, not you. If you time bomb an application and delete company information, you could technically be liable for its loss/recovery.

You'd stand a good chance of doing more harm to yourself and your career, than you would do any good. If your work is truly outstanding, then why not show it to your employer as an example of how you're saving the company time and money? That will go a lot farther in the long run.

Helped by forum's members I developed some applications for my own use and then I let them for my colleagues! The applications make the life easier! They really appreciate my work and I am very glad that I could do it!
I did a test, I added a date and after that date, in the very next day when the wkb was open a simple sheet with a UserForm was deleted. my phone was ringing continuously...I told them that somebody did not use the wkb as I described into "help" userform, I lied...! From that moment, everyone is happy and very carefully!
my boss appreciates my work too, he paid me in a way..!
find the way to show to your team that you do/can do something for they!

You gambled your career here. I'm guessing you're used to a user base that aren't very savvy in VBA, so you probably saw this as low risk. If the harmful code was spotted by someone who knew what it meant though - most would consider that a termination worthy ethical breach. I strongly recommend against repeating this kind of thing in the future.

I agree with all, i also put together quite a complex data base system that i use at work and makes my job much easier. i really enjoyed doing it and got lots of help from forum members, i mentioned and showed it to a manager and now it has been adopted throuout the company, i get great pleasure knowing that i have brought somthing to a company that i enjoyed putting together. and no i wouldnt be upset if they fired me sometime in the future.

I work in a small environment.
I am not a pc specialist, my duties lie elsewhere.
The work I have on on VBA is to make my work better and easier, not so someone one else could take advantage of it. There is no contract giving them ownership of my programing.


I took a long weekend off and when I came back the Fc#$King noobie that just started was making noise on how I don't do any thing - how everything is automated. Says a trained monkey could do what i do. FFCKER is related to friends of the owner.

I got three weeks vacation coming up and I want my job when I return.

I am not trying to delete any of the companies data, just MY software.
