Second data series type to a bar graph

Hey all,

I'm having an incredibly frustrating problem with adding a second data series type to my already established gantt chart of lab data. Essentially I want to add a target line to the graph so the guys know a deadline for the work graphically. Unfortunately the process doesn't seem to work with "bar" type charts as opposed to "column type" For a column type on 2007 the process is simple

• Select data series
• Go to design, then click change chart type
• Select line. Job done

However doing this on the "bar" type inserts it using the same axis as it would for a column even though the graph is essentially rotated 90 degrees clockwise. Excel then seems to need to create a 2nd Y-axis instead of keeping it all on the same graph.

Is there anyway round this? Or is this an oversight by Microsoft!?

That's how Excel charts work.

To get the effect you want, a "line-bar" chart, you need to use an XY chart series for the line, and pick your data accordingly.
