I would like to build a scatterplot where each icon is a simple arrow. The arrow would change orientation based on a given value so, for instance, if the value were above 80 the arrow would point upward but under 20 would point straight down.

Is there a way to use the arrows, either the ones that appear under the Shapes / lines menu, or under conditional formatting / icon sets / directional, as icons in a chart? Ideally I could change the orientation by specifying a degree value, but if the directions were predefined that would work too.

There does not seem to be an option for this under the .xlMarkerStyle property for the chart data point.

Thanks for any help.

Excel Facts

Shade all formula cells
To shade all formula cells: Home, Find & Select, Formulas to select all formulas. Then apply a light fill color.
Could you use data labels? The font type Webdings 3 has arrows for the letters "h" & "i", name the data ranges either h or i, add a data label but choose the series name instead of the value then format it so it appears as an arrow.

Thanks, this works out. I just turned off the color for the actual icon and centered the data label using the wingdings 3 font to get the functionality I need.

It would be nice if Excel allowed using an actual arrow type object for this, so you could adjust the thickness property instead of only being able to change the size.

Good.
Experiment with som eof the symbol based font types and you might get better arrows. Apllying these fonts to the functions CHAR(1) through CHAR(166) also gives good symbols.
