Scanning Data into Excel

I am looking for a way to scan data into Excel in the background while other programs are open and active. We currently use a scanner connected by USB to scan data into a secure site for time vouchering. I would like this data to be scanned simultaneously into Excel. Essentially I am attempting to create a spreadsheet which collects real time data. Any information on the subject would be appreciated.

Excel Facts

Quick Sum
Select a range of cells. The total appears in bottom right of Excel screen. Right-click total to add Max, Min, Count, Average.
