Row naming + Index function ??

Hi,

I have the following problem: I have two workbooks in Excel with the first stating time series information about a company, for example the revenue of the company broken down by country (in rows), i.e. Caribban, Panama, Macau and then total; while the years are stated in columns i.e. I can look up the revenue in Macau in 2007.

I have named the total revenue as well as th years via Insert->Name->Define as "revenues" or "2008", "2009" etc

On my second workbook, I would like to retrieve parts of the information from workbook 1.
For example I would like to retrieve total revenue in year 2008 and 2009 but not 2007.

In the past I have done so by using the Index function, selecting the entire table of workbook 1 as array, the row and column number.

But obviously it would be more understandable if I could now use the new naming in that index function, so that I could set the formula up like:

=Index(workbook1revenus;workbook12008)

In order to retrieve the total revenue in 2008.

To my understanding this does not work with the index function, but I am sure you have an idea how to solve this (pretty straight forward) problem.

If Years refers to C1:H1 and Revenues to C7:H7, try:

=INDEX(Book1.xls!Revenues,MATCH(2008,Book1.xls!Years,0))

Hi,

as a follow up to my question yesterday.

Based on your suggested formula:
=INDEX(Book1.xls!Revenues,MATCH(2008,Book1.xls!Years,0))

After having named the Revenue row correctly, the formula reduces to
=INDEX(Revenues,MATCH(2008,Book1.xls!Years,0))

Can I now replace the Revenues by a link to another cell i.e. $B6 where I write Revenues ?
This would allow me to make the formula shorter i.e.
=INDEX($B6,MATCH(2008,Book1.xls!Years,0)) and I could drag it down.

But if I try it excel gives me a #REF!

Have you got any thoughts on this?

but it doesn't make the formula shorter..
