Root cause basic functions in Excel?

Hi all,

I would like to make a template in Excel to record a Root cause analysis. Do you think that this is possible?

In my mind I imagine a basic Excel spreadsheet with a number of boxes, pre-established across the top of the sheet. Each box allows text to be inserted as normal but also has "expander" arrows that insert additional boxes the immediate right column or the immediate row below. Each of the boxes then automatically has the same arrows included.

Each box would also have a delete "x" included so errors can be removed that removes the box or column as required.

Below is a picture that could reflect a completed structure, but when the investigation commences there would only be the top two rows

Hope this makes sense...any assistance appreciated

cheers
Mark

It sounds like it might be more appropriate to a drawing program, like Visio, which can also be automated via VBA. If I understand the process, it's more like recursive analyses of what caused what, until you get to the frozen O-ring.

Yes Shg,

That's it. I would like to use Excel though as it is more common among users than Visio. Do you think that it can still be done?

With some disproportionate amount of effort, probably. It doesn't need anything Excel is good at.
