Ribbon Frozen (Not Responding)

I've run into a problem recently. Sometimes when I double-click to open a file, the ribbon stops responding, or is frozen. None of the buttons respond to the mouse (can't click, don't highlight when the pointer hovers, etc.). I can still edit the contents of the file, but the only way to save is to close Excel entirely.

It seems to occur most often when I double-click a file to open it or when I'm working with a remotely stored file, but those are not the only time it happens. It also doesn't happen every time I double-click or access a remote file, it sometimes happens with a locally-stored file. It seems to get worse the longer I've had Excel open and the more files I've worked on, but I can't pinpoint a cause.

Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks!
