I have an Excel Spreadsheet with a data model with several tables in it that are linked together in the data model. Then I have created a Pivot Table in Excel based on the measures and tables in the data model. My simple question is, if I go to the Data Ribbon and hit Refresh All, is it supposed to always refresh the queries AND the Pivot Table as well? I can't completely tell what is going on. Thanks for the help.

Excel Facts

Why are there 1,048,576 rows in Excel?
The Excel team increased the size of the grid in 2007. There are 2^20 rows and 2^14 columns for a total of 17 billion cells.
If the Pivot Table is based on the content of the data model, it should refresh at the same time as the source queries. If the Pivot Table is based on the cells loaded into the worksheet, you'd need to refresh the PT separately after the queries refresh.

Everything is in the data model but a couple small reference tables reside within this same spreadsheet. Since things appear to me to not refresh unless I also refresh the pivot tables, do you think that might be the reason? I could move those tables and see but thought I'd ask for your thoughts first. Thanks.

In my experience, if the pivot table fields list is based on a source that includes this icon, it'll refresh with the query.

If it doesn't have the orange component, it will require a separate refresh. When you make the PT, be sure to click the radio button to use the workbook's data model as the source.
