reference to cells with variable rownumbers to be found in another cell

I want to use the formula MAX(C3:C8) (or any other formula in fact), but instead of the indices 3 and 8 I would like to indicate two numbers that are to be fetched from a certain cell (or 2 cells of course).
For example : cell A23 contains 5 and cell A24 contains 12, and I would like to see the result of the formula MAX(C5;C12) automatically.
