Looks to me like someone's been using Paste Special > Add. Is it near some cells that people have used this method to convert text to numbers (copy a blank cell and paste special > add to the range - much quicker than the 'convert to number' option from the smart tag).
 
^^ By jove I think he's got it! That would explain the bizarre formula.
