Reading External XML File

I have a workbook that has one data sheet that has 100 columns which are named ranges used for data validation on columns. What I have found is that this file will normally end up 5-10 meg in size, which is too big for people to download. I have tried a few utilities to shrink it, but it doesnt so it by much. So I thought maybe what I would do is have the workbook and an external XML file that will hold lists that I can use for named ranges for data validation. Does this sound feasible or is there a better way to use lists for data validation without bloating the excel file? Also, what is the best way to read and write the external XML file if I have to support back to Excel 2000?

Thanks
C
