I have an access database residing on a server. The server is not installed with access. The problem is two users are not able to open the database at the same time. The second user could be able to open only in read only mode.

I have made the database shared. from the tools option. still it dosent works..

Can a formula spear through sheets?
Use =SUM(January:December!E7) to sum E7 on all of the sheets from January through December
Sounds to me as though you have placed the database on the server and everyone is trying to access the same set of forms etc. You need to split the database for multi-user setups. Do this: Put the database back on your machine for now.
Open the database and Tools | Database Utilities | Split database. You will be prompted for a name and location for the backend data. Navigate to the sever location the you want to use, give the backend a name, and click OK.
In a few seconds you will have the front end (forms, reports, queries) separated from the tables. Put copies of the front end on machines of those who need to use the database.
