read only document

i have an excel document on a 3 1/2 disk that was NOT saved as read only, but when trying to open it i am receiving the message "cannot access read only document".
i really need to info from this document asap. i also am not able to acces the properties on this doc, i receive a message "cannot return file properties....file may be in use"

I am not an Excel guru by any stretch but, have you tried copying the file to your hard drive first and then opening it?
Once the file is on the HD, right click the file and check the properties (under General tab)to be sure that the file is not set to 'read only'. Hopefully this will allow you to get to your data.
