I am trying to figure out a formula in excel that calculates reaction time and feet per second, but I just can not get the breakdown correct. If the ball is traveling 60 miles for 40 feet how long does it take to reach home plate, the answer is 88 feet per second. How do I adapt the formula below to an excel formula.

60 miles 1 hour 1 minute 5280 feet 88 feet
-------- * -------- * -------- * -------- = --------
1 hour 60 minutes 60 seconds 1 mile 1 second

If the ball is traveling 90 MPH from 60 feet 90 mph would equal 132 feet per second. Please help! Thanks in advance.

Stephen - are you basically saying that you want to convert Miles Per Hour (MPH) into Feet Per Second (FPS) ?

If cell A1 contains the MPH figure, then

Code:
=A1*5280/3600

will do it for you.

If you need some variation on this, post back if you're having trouble working it out.

try this:

input the mph and the distance in feet, and you get back fps and reaction time. Thus:

a1 to d1 labels : mph, distance, fps, rt

input mph to a2 and feet distance to b2,

c2:=(A2*5280)/3600 (Thanks prev poster) gives fps
d2:=B2/C2 gives reaction time. 90 mph for 90 feet is about 132 fps, or .68 sec

The problem is that the ball is accelerating as it leaves the pitcher and is slowing as it goes so its an average at best

make sense?

Thank you both very much. Gerald I am still trying to figure out where the 3600 comes from?
