With the help of Mr. Excel I was able to complete an application for my wife's company over the weekend.

This project required VBA code.
Before I joined the board on 10/18/2006, I spent about 40 hrs learning VBA and got this application to its final stages. It is now complete and runs great. thanks again to a few people on the board who are infinitely further ahead in VBA programming than me.

I had no intention of charging the company anything, just doing it as a favor, but the VP is insistent in wanting to pay me something.

This is not my full time job. I am a software sales industry recruiter and I don't feel like I should charge them 40 hrs for me learning VBA these last 2-3 weeks. Being fair to both of us, what does anyone think I should ask for payment ?

BTW, what they wanted done in Excel would have taken me about 1 day if the application could have been developed in Access or Paradox, because of the relationships between sets of data

One hardware support guy the company uses is charging them $100/hr. But he's very experienced in putting togther networks, configuring servers, etc.

What do you think would be fair to both of us?

Thanks for your help.

Why can't spreadsheets drive cars? They crash too often!
HOw much of the 40 hours was spent learning, making dumb mistakes, and rewriting? How long do you think it would have taken with your present knowledge of VBA? $100/hr is probably not outrageous for a consultant of medium experience.

I learned my craft from forums like Mr Excel and the Microsoft newsgroups from many very smart people. I have gained credibility from posting on these forums. I get traffic to my web site from people following up on my posts. Plus I enjoy doing this. So, uh, no charge.
