Rank ignoring character

Hi is it possible to rank numbers ignoring a "*" at the start or end of a number? As in below example?

*64.9
71.4
40.3
84.1*

Thanks for any input

in a helper cell > =SUBSTITUTE(A1,"*",""). I cant get it to work in RANK on its own?
