For some reson my PC will no longer play Windows sounds. It will play media files with sound, just no Windows sounds. When I go to sounds in the control panel, everything looks normal, except the button to test a sound file for a particular event is grayed out. My sound files are all there. This occurs when the administrator is logged in as well as when I am logged in. He has no idea what would cause this. I did net searches but cannot find anything about this. is this a Windows feature that can be disabled?

thanks
Fred

Hi, I am sure there are a dozen reasons this could happen so this may not be the same for you but it worked for me.

I had a similar problem, greyed out option in sound under control panel, I dont recall if I could still play music files but sound was knocked out all the same.

I happen to do a chdkdsk and I noticed it try to fix a file to do with my sound drivers, it didn't really help fix the sound problem but at least it pointed me in the right direction and it seems that my drivers were corrupt, I messed about with removing them and re-install the latest version etc and it worked again.

Sometime later (months or days, I cant remember) my hard disk died.

Probably wont help you but try removing your sound drivers after downloading the latest versions and install them. This was some time ago now so details are a bit hazy.
