Is there a useful program that works out excel equations in plain english?! I come across a lot of very complex equations that need explaining and modifying, and it would be very useful to have some helping tool to work out what on earth it does...!

In Excel 2002 (I think) or later, tools --> formula auditing --> evaluate formula may help, as it will step through your formula.
Similarly, you can select a portion of the formula in the formula bar and pressing F9 to calculate only what's selected (note to press Esc when you're done stepping through with F9, or you'll end up storing only the values instead of the functions).
