Problem with external link

Hello,
I have experienced an unusual problem with formulas referring to another workbook. When re-opening the master xls file and choosing the update option, the error message "This workbook contains one or more links that cannot be updated" comes out and the formulas containing external links switch to #Value! error. The Edit links... dialogue however shows Status OK on the source file links. The only solutions to rectify is to Open the Source file and at this stage the formulas switch to correct values again.
Choosing the Don´t update option at start does not help, the formulas will nevertheless show #Value! errors.
Excel is 2003, master and source files are in different directories on the same disk and the formula is SUMIF.
Can somebody please help on this problem ?

I have same type of problem before its the sumif function, change it to sumproduct instead or sum array function

Welcome to the Board.

SUMIF requires that the source workbook is open. SUMPRODUCT works though. If you don't know how to change your formula post it.

Andrew, thanks for the explanation ! But I never came accros SUM PRODUCT function before and from the function description I do not really understand how could I get the same effect as with SUM IF function. I need to sum only cells which match certain text criteria from a lenghty list.

Andrew, Kevin - thank you both very much for your help. Using SUM PRODUCT solved my problem and it actually also helped to simplify my formulas as I am using multiple criteria.
