Probability tricky question

I am having trouble to figure out this tricky question. I kind of thought using the prob function but I guess I am wrong Pls help..

Four relatives are going to give you money for your birthday. The amount each relative gives you is equally likely to be any number between $0 and $200. The chance that the total amount of money you receive is at most $300 is ......?

Could you show me how to figure it out..I have been trying but cant think out side the box.

Well in A1 thru D8814 I entered:

=RANDBETWEEN(0,200)

and in E1:

=SUM(A1:D1) and copied down

then in another cell:

=COUNTIF(E1:E8814,"<" & 300)/COUNT(E1:E8814)

which yields around .2

With 1,000,000 draws I got 20.3115%.
But a random draw or simulation will only get close to the real probability.

So the Probability Distribution Function (PDF) for each relative is linear,
so is the resulting PDF linear?
No. There is only one way to get 0 or 800,
but more ways to get other totals.

To illustrate how to get a PDF,
take a simpler case (smaller range - integer amounts from 0 to 10)
and with 4 relatives.

Place 4 Columns of numbers 0 to 10 in the starting in Cell A1.

So for example to get the probability that the sum of all 4 will be no more than 10,
the sum of the first 11 Rows of the Column on the right is 6.83696%.

This approach of listing all the combinations will not work for your example,
because there are too many combinations, with 4 Columns of 0 to 200.

This does not look like a real world situation,
more like homework.

One way of looking at it is assuming a Normal Distribution (justified with n being so high) and then using some basic properties of this assumed distribution to estimate the probability. Can be done with something like this:

Where the standard deviation is calculated from the variance of each random variable (which takes on the values 0-200) and the mean is just the expected value of each relatives gift times 4.

I did this by convolving the PDFs (which I think is correct) and got 0.202909262

It seems that there should be a way to do this with BINOMDIST.

I followed another (lazier) path, considered this is equivalent of adding several uniform [0,1] uniform distribution.
This makes it a Irwin–Hall distribution, with n=4 and x =1.5 (300/200). I was able to use the known coefficients, in

I got a little less: 20.0521%

The quick test I did in the worksheet was:

- 1 million rows with =rand() in columns AD. In column E 1 if the sum of AD is <=1.5, 0 otherwise.

The approximate probability is =Sum(E:E)/1000000

I recalculated several times and the average was very close to the value above.

Using the CDF at the link, can't that be calculated in closed form as

=1/FACT(4) * COMBIN(4, 0)*(1.5-0)^4 ~ 21.09%
