PowerPivot - missing data, pivot tables, range names etc

Hi

I have just started using Power Pivot. I created a Power Pivot file on the network and imported several tables of data from other Excel files. I created several pivot tables and measures. I then copied all the files to my c: drive so I could work on the model on my laptop at home.

I developed the model further: imported more data from other Excel files now on my c: drive; created more pivot tables and measures and charts etc. Starting to look good.

When I got back to work, I copied everything back to the network and overwrote the existing files. Could open everything OK except the Power Pivot model. It crashed twice stating an 'Excel problem'. Third time the file opened with repairs. The Power Pivot data, pivot tables, measures, sparklines and range names were gone. I then tried to open the version that was still on my c: drive. Same problem.

Does anyone know what caused this problem? I am about to re-build it but don't want this to happen again ....

I am using Excel 2010.

Excel Facts

What is the fastest way to copy a formula?
If A2:A50000 contain data. Enter a formula in B2. Select B2. Double-click the Fill Handle and Excel will shoot the formula down to B50000.
First off, I over save versions. About every 5th measure I write or anytime I add another pivot.

The first piece of advice Rob Collie ever gave me was version, version, version.

"Short answer regardless: save often, with new filenames. If your desktop isn’t littered with filenames with names ending in v19, v20, v21, you’re taking too big of a risk :)"

Secondly, formulas are portable. So when I do some work with existing data "off line" in a copy of a workbook, I take the time to copy/paste over the new measures I write from my "offline" copy into my latest version.

Happy PowerPivoting
