On page 210, Bill Jelen managed to sort the powerpivot chart by month, without explaining how he managed to do it. No matter how I sort, it still appears in alphabetical order. I can sort the powerpivot table by month, but not the chart. Can someone please explain how this can be done for chart?

Excel Facts

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
You need to go into the PowerPivot model, and in the date table select the month column, and then click Home>Sort and Filter>Sort By Column. That gives you a dialog where you can choose which column to sort your selected column by (it would MonthNumber in your case).

I am using Excel 2010 powerpivot. There is no sort by column under sort and filter and no dialog. I would prefer to sort by month in this format, Jan, Feb, Mar... Dec, and not in numbering from 1, 2, 3.... 12. Bill Jelen did it, but he did not explain how this was done!

Thanks!

I managed to sort the month. When u add a powerpivot chart, there is a corresponding pivot table generated by Excel located on another sheet, e.g. Data for Sheet 1 Chart 1. All I need to do is to sort the month on the pivot table on sheet 1 and the related chart will be sorted accordingly.

Thanks!

I also have Excel 2010 with Power Pivot and there is a sort and filter group there in mine. Maybe you have a very old PP version. You are sorting within month number, because that is implicitly sorted in the order you want, but you are sorting month name by month number, that is what PP gives you, and you then display Monthname in the pivot.

theBardd is exactly correct. You need to upgrade your PP, will will also get a diagram view, which is nice.
