PowerPivot Dates converting to text in pivot table

I have data in my PowerPivot window from an Access database. There are several date fields and the PowerPivot Data types are all correctly set as dates, however, whenever I create a pivot table from this data my dates are converted to text and cannot be changed. This is making sorting by date impossible. Can anyone help? Thanks!
