Power Query Refreshment via PowerBI

So, my interpretation of the following is that when bringing in data using Power Query, you HAVE to load it to the data model in order for it to be refreshed via PowerBI?

Does anyone know how this affects merged queries in PQ?

"Besides the data source and authentication type, there is another restriction that could determine whether or not an Excel workbook will refresh. If you've loaded the data to an Excel worksheet, it cannot be scheduled for refresh. The alternative is to load the query directly into the data model by changing the query’s load settings."

Excel Facts

Does the VLOOKUP table have to be sorted?
No! when you are using an exact match, the VLOOKUP table can be in any order. Best-selling items at the top is actually the best.
The query in which you perform the query merge in needs to be loaded into the data model as well.
Basically everything that shall be refreshed via PowerBI needs to go through the data model.

Gotcha - I figured, but I wanted to make sure I was understanding correctly.

So, Imke - when you merge and possibly "fold" - do you hide a lot of the models in PP? I get distracted easily with so many tabs and whatnot. Just wondering :)

There's no need to hide anything in the data model.

You just put queries into the data model that shall be refreshed in Power BI.

So i.e. the queries that went into your merge-operation shouldn't passed to the data model because they need to go through your "merge query" before loaded to Power BI.

Hope I got your question right :-)

So, if I have to queries that I merge (so, 3 all together) and I only load the merged query into the data model, will a scheduled refresh still work?

Imke -

I have the Power BI Gateway set up to refresh documents, but it isn't saving a new file. Also, the refreshed data isn't showing up unless I "Refresh All" data, which is what I thought the Gateway was supposed to be doing.

Any thoughts? Should I start a new thread?
