In cell K12 I have the formula =K10-K11. If cell K10 is less than cell K11 it shoes the result with a minus sign, or a negative number, but if cell K10 is greater than cell K11 is just shoes the correct number. What I would like to do is if cell K10 is greater than cell K11 I would like the correct number shown with the plus (+) sign in front of the number. Help please!

One other issue I'm having is that I'm unable to change the color of some cells by going to the fill color icon in the ribbon on top of the worksheet. Any suggestions?

Thanks-
Dan

Excel Facts

How to find 2nd largest value in a column?
MAX finds the largest value. =LARGE(A:A,2) will find the second largest. =SMALL(A:A,3) will find the third smallest
To answer the first question, try changing the formula to:

=ABS(K10-K11)

To answer the second question, check to see if those cells have a conditional formatting applied to them.

Have tried two responses but neither have worked!

HotPepper's solution works fine. Do you know how to apply a custom number format?

No, I'm sorry! I do appreciate your help. If you could please send the exact formula from HotPepper that worked, I would be most grateful!

Thanks-

I'm surprised this "+"General;-General;0 is not working as a format applied to a cell, i pasted straight into the custom format on the cell

obviously 2007 or 2010

works in 2007 for me, any language variation on your set up. not sure if its an issue here, some variants interchange , and ;

Select the cell, do Ctrl+1 (i.e., press and hold the Cntl key, then press the number 1).

Select the Number tab, click Custom at the bottom of the list.

In the type box, paste +General;-General;0 then press OK.

OK! That worked, but now is there a formula that I can put in that will automatically put the (+) sign in front of any positive number? For example in cell K10 the number 37 is there. Right below that in cell K11 is the number 34.5. Now in cell K12, since I have put in the above, is the number +2.5 which is correct. What I would like to do now is format other cells to do this as soon as the numbers are entered.

Thanks again!
