Pivot Table won't refresh until file is saved manually

Thanks for any ideas in advance!
I have an excel file that I download from a server. It grabs some data and uses a pivot table to display results.
The problem is that it does not refresh (even manually) until I save the file locally.

I have 'refresh on load' checked.

The REALLY annoying thing is that a colleague downloads the file and his refreshes manually without needing to save.
I checked all the excel settings (autosaving etc.) and versions (we're both on 2010 vn 14.0.6123.5001) and have not found anything that alters the behaviour.
Could there be a setting on temp folders in IE that prevents the pivot from refreshing?

many thanks!

Steve

Excel Facts

How to total the visible cells?
From the first blank cell below a filtered data set, press Alt+=. Instead of SUM, you will get SUBTOTAL(9,)
Hi Steve,

Please explain the specifics of: "It grabs some data and uses a pivot table to display results."

1. Does the PivotTable already exist before you do the download, or is it being created in the process?

2. What type of data source does the PivotTable end up using? (Range in the same workbook, Range in an external workbook, or a data connection?)

3. Is there a macro or VBA involved in the process? How does the PivotTable get created, of if it already exists, how does the PivotTable get linked to the download data? Are you just downloading a file to overwrite an existing linked file?

Hi Jerry,
thanks for leaning in to this.
1. Yes, the pivot table is in the excel that's downloaded and has the 'refresh on open' option set.
2. The pivot uses a named range which points to a table of numbers on a separate worksheet (hidden, but in the same workbook)
3. There's no VBA code in the file - in fact we're activly trying to avoid the VBA code approach due to hassle with enabling macros in the security settings.

thanks again

What process are you using to download the Excel file? (downloading from a SharePoint Server, or emailed to you, or something else?)

Select the pivottable and then click the "Change Data Source" icon in the Ribbon.
Post the reference that is listed as the current data source. Do that both before and after saving the file manually.
