Pivot Table Help with Dates Needed!

I’m using Excel 2010. Normally, when I create a pivot table that contains dates, the pivot table drop down list will let me select/filter the dates based on year, month, and day. For example, it might say January with a little “+” mark which I can then expand and only look at transactions on January 15th if I want.

The problem I’m having is that the pivot table lists out all the exact dates, as if they were text. For example, 01/01/2013, 01/02/2013, 01/03/2013. How do I change this?

Note, I do not want to manually group my dates by month by right clicking and going to group and selecting a group. I want it done automatically like it has been for me in the past. I feel like the solution is simple, but I can’t figure it out. Please help!

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
why don't you use helpcolumns in your table.

=year()
=month()
=day()

Then you can select on this criteria in your pivot table.

I'm trying to avoid that because my table already has 23 columns. Of those 23 columns, 4 of them pertain to dates (request date, approval date by group, approval date by accounting, payment date). So, having each of the 4 columns split out to to be year/month/day would result in adding another 8 columns for 31 total. I'm trying to keep it simple if at all possible.
