Hi, I have a list of dates in a pivot table; I amusing Excel 2016.
I would like to present these dates grouped by month; however I cannot seem to do this?
Apparently when I put dates into a Pivot on Excel 2016 it automatically groups them - it doesn't with these!
Dates are formatted to be DD/MM/YYYY. I can group, when it says 'Group 1', but if I select 'Group selection', no dialogue box appears?

Excel Facts

Format cells as date
Select range and press Ctrl+Shift+3 to format cells as date. (Shift 3 is the # sign which sort of looks like a small calendar).
Hi,

Wherever you are keeping the raw data, in the column next to it put this formula =ISNUMBER(A1) pointing it to date cell.

What you are seeing generally happens when the date is stored as text.

Thanks

I am seeing FALSE
What is in this cell is showing as a date, BUT the date cell is being populated from a VLOOKUP formula, so there is a formula in there all the time which I need to keep...

try to add to your vlookup formula: -- like: =--VLOOKUP( etc... , it should give you a number then format it as date

or show your vlookup formula

Thanks, this now says TRUE
But I still can't get the pivot to group by month!

re-create your pivot table from the beginning and try again

or post a link to shared excel file, desensitize first if necessary. (use OneDrive, GoogleDrive, DropBox or any similar)

Hi, I tried that last week and couldn't manage to upload anything.
All I am trying to do is create a line chart from the picot data, but rather than all of the data points being each individual day, I want them grouped into months as there are too many if individual.
I tried to edit the axis and the 'Date axis' under the Axis Type option is greyed out.
I may have to give up :(

as I said, use any server (mentioned above) share your file there, copy link to shared file and paste link here, this is not so hard :)

or even this one: http://tinyupload.com/

Your dates are text not a number that is why you cannot group by month

see here: Example file
