Hi,

I am working accounting number format, and I would like to have negative numbers appear as parenthesis. The tough part is I would like the dollar sign to be on the left side of the cell, and the number (in the parenthesis) on the right side of the cell. I dont need any decimal places, and I don't want the negative number to appear in red.

Thanks for any help,

JRudner

You can teach Excel a new custom list. Type the list in cells, File, Options, Advanced, Edit Custom Lists, Import, OK
Doesn't seem tough. You've just described the default behavior of the number format Accounting. There's even an icon for it on the Formatting Toolbar, the $ sign. Click that, then press CTRL-1 on the cell(s) and remove the decimal places.

Hi there, I tried that but the negative number does not appear in parenthesis. I would like it to read something like $ (500)

In other words, I would like the dollar-sign to be on the left side of the cell, and the negative number on the right side of the cell in parenthesis.

Thanks,

Sorry, this is the default for Accounting number format. I can't imagine why you're having an issue.

Highlight your values, press CTRL-1, click in NUMBER > Category > Accounting > Decimal Places = 0

Excel Workbook
O
42$ (3)
43$ 57
44$ (122)
45$ 55
46$ (36)

I try that, but it is giving me a minus sign instead of parenthesis. I am running Excel 2007. Could this be a cause?

Thanks

Hi jrudner

That's not the default in excel 2007 for Accounting.

- Right-click on the cell
- Choose Format->Cells
- Click on the Number tab and in the Category choose Custom
- Enter in the text box

$* #.##0_);$* (#.##0)

- click OK

Sorry, it was, of course, a comma and not a dot for the thousand separator

$* #,##0_);$* (#,##0)
