I have a spreadsheet of records from 2 database tables in Excel (one row per joined record). I want to be able to outline and hide the detail part. I can't seem to do it. I don't need or want subtotals or anything like that.

I have (simplified):
Account Name Date Amount
123 Smith 9/1/2015 10
123 Smith 10/1/2015 9
167 Jones 1/1/2014 8

I want to see:
123 Smith (rest hidden with + to expand to see last 2 cols)
167 Jones (rest hidden with +)

It can be grouped by the first column or first 2 (first is key really).

Welcome to MrExcel,

Are you trying to expand and collapse columns or rows?

You describe "(rest hidden with + to expand to see last 2 cols)", but I'm not following whether you want to:
1. Expand the column group to unhide those two columns (which would unhide the entire columns for all records); or

2. Expand hidden rows that contain the detail for each displayed Account-Name. e.g. for the first example there would be 3 rows. The first with 123 Smith, the 2nd and 3rd with the Date and Amounts only.

I want to hide rows and columns. From what you are saying, that isn't possible with the data in its current state.

I want to show the first row minus the last 2 columns. When you click to expand, show all the rows for that account and the last 2 columns.

It sounds like what I would really need to do is use a macro or something to restructure the data creating a parent row for each account.

Now that I am thinking about it more, maybe I just want groups with "totals". For the "totals" I can take the max of each of the parent fields (they are all the same). Then it can be expanded to show all the detail.

It looks like you found a solution. Adding sub-totals will group the rows and create a parent row that can have totals.
