Oracle vs. Access sorting

I am using Access as a front end for an Oracle database and have trouble running queries after importing data from Oracle if there is an underscore characater in a field.

If I run a make table query and join this table in a query with other Access data it works fine, but if I join the new table to linked Oracle tables it doesn't.

I've narrowed the problem to how each system sorts data. Oracle uses ASCII sorting so AT_AMM comes after ATN123, but Access formatting ignores the "_" so AT_AMM comes before ATN123. If I run a query linking data from the imported Table (now in Access format) associated with AT_AMM it can't find the reference because the Oracle data looks like this:

ATN123
AT_AMM
AWN123

Has anyone seen this before? I have worked with Access as a front end for Oracle for many applications, and this is the first time this has been a problem.
