Opening files from explorer

Hi,

Normally doubleclicking an excel file in the explorer opens the file in excel. However when I do this something strange happens. If for instance I open a file called file.xls this way, it opens as file1.xls, i.e. the number 1 is added automatically to the file name. Opening the same file from excel through File/Open works correctly. I use Excel 97 in Windows NT.

Any ideas what causes this phenomenon and how to get rid of it?

Will the fill handle fill 1, 2, 3?
Yes! Type 1 in a cell. Hold down Ctrl while you drag the fill handle.
Hello:

Double check your file name. I believe you will find it is filename.xlt as opposed to filename.xls. That is because it was saved a a TEMPLATE. The addition of a number to the file name is intentional to prevent users from saving over the template. If you want to open it as the template and NOT a new file, right click on the icon and choose open. For more information, do a search in the help files for "templates"

Sorry, that is not the answer. My problem happens for each and every file that I try to open through the Windows explorer and they all have the extension xls. As I said opening the files through the File/Open method works correctly.

Thanks anyway

Surprise,

Opening the file from explorer by rightclicking and selecting Open does open the file without the addition of a 1 after the name.
