Hello,
I have a folder for each month and inside each month, I may have one named "balance sheet" and one named "income statement." It is so much easier for me to just leave them with than name inside the month folder, rather than having a folder named "January" and then inside it have "Balance Sheet Jan_07" for a lot of reasons. Anyway, you know how you always have certain people who have to complain about EVERYTHING. Well, she wanted things one way, and then when I did that, now she complains that she can't open like January's balance sheet and February's balance sheet at the same time, because they have the same name. I know I could just put a a number or something after, like Balance Sheet1, but TRUST ME, even though usually the sheets that link to the Balance sheet would auto correct the formulas and everything would be fine, for some reason it doesn't update them sometimes and that causes a HUGE mess. We have what is called "Khalix for Excel" and it messes up all the time, like when you add rows and other things, it will mess up all of the other formulas, it is very unusual.
So, my question is: Is there a way to change a setting or something so that you can open 2 files with the same name at the same time?
I would appreciate it SOOOOOOOOOO much.
Thanks
Mel~

Excel Facts

Which came first: VisiCalc or Lotus 1-2-3?
Dan Bricklin and Bob Frankston debuted VisiCalc in 1979 as a Visible Calculator. Lotus 1-2-3 debuted in the early 1980's, from Mitch Kapor.
If you open a new instance of Excel (from the start menu or desktop or wherever you have it), you should be able to open the second workbook in this new instance despite having the same name.

thanks so much for the response. I told her that but she didn't like it. some people are so complicated. is there any other way. i remember with Lotus 123 (way back in the old days LOL) you could open two files with the same name, so I was hoping there was some kind of setting.

Hi

There is a kinda way of doing it: in the Excel open file dialog, when you have selected the file, instead of simply clickimh 'Open', you need to click on the drop down arrow next to the Open button, and choose Open As Copy. Then you can open multiple instances of the file, as Excel will automatically give each additional copy a sequential index number.
