The Excel team snuck a new feature into Excel and I didn't realize it for a while. Thanks to Excel MVP Abiola David for realizing that you can left-click any number in the status bar to copy that number to the clipboard.
You can then paste to an e-mail or a text file or, I guess, even to Excel.
This also has a throw-back reference to the 2012 book, Don't Fear the Spreadsheet, available here: Don't Fear the Spreadsheet

When did this happen - Copy any status bar number to the clipboard.
Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast.
I am Bill jelen.
This amazing tip sent along by Abiola David. You know, we've we've all known that if you select more than one cell that contains a number, the status bar will show you this.
Some of you and I'm sure most of you have right-clicked here and changed it to show the Average, Count, Numerical Count, Min, Max, and Sum so you get all those statistics.
That's great, right?
But what's brand new down here and this apparently has been out for almost a year.
Let's say that I want to put that Average somewhere without entering the AVERAGE function.
Just come down here and hover over Average.
And it says “This is the average of selected cells”.
But then what's new is Copy to Clipboard.
So when I left click it will put it on the clipboard.
Then just go up here and Ctrl+V and it pastes that number.
Isn't that insane?
So, here is the MIN.
Left click on the clipboard.
Ctrl+V to Paste – wild!
When did that come along?
I don't know, but it it certainly could be helpful.
When I saw this, it sent me way back.
To a book that we had written back then called Don't Fear the Spreadsheet.
It is for people completely new to Excel.
It's not in print anymore, but there were a few sections in there where we collected stories of people who were doing things in Excel that there were a much faster way.
And so I went back and looked it up in the book because I remember this story.
Kevin worked at a helpdesk and someone over in the accounting department (a temp) says “Hey they use a lot of VLOOKUP over here.
Can you come give me some refreshers on VLOOKUP?” And so as he gets to the desk.
he watch is the temp worker doing this.
Selecting the numbers like that and then seeing the total of 12946.
And she would say it three times out loud: 12946, 12946, 12946.
Because she had learned that when she clicked away to put the total in, the total disappears, of course, right?
So if that person is still out there and still thinks that the SUM function is complete voodoo, then the great news is they can simply left click now and paste and they will be good to go.
It's interesting that that paste.
It's not a regular pace, it's not a paste like it's coming from Excel.
It's a paste as if it's coming from outside of Excel.
And I guess the status bar is just a little bit outside of the Excel grid.
Nowm hey, this is a horrible way to sum.
You should always sum with the SUM function.
But they are certainly going to be times where you just need to take that average, put it in an email and now it will be easy to do.
