trying to count column A if column B = "ABC"

so, column A has account numbers in it and column B has a 3 letter code.
cell F1 has account number XXX12345.

In cell G1 I want to count the number of times that account number appears in column A if a certain code ("ABC") appears in column B

not quite sure where to begin on this

Fastest way to copy a worksheet?
Hold down the Ctrl key while dragging tab for Sheet1 to the right. Excel will make a copy of the worksheet.
have you considered a pivot table?

Alternatively:

=sumproduct(--(a1:a10="XXX123456"),--(b1:b10="ABC"))

Thanks Paddy

I have very little experience with pivot tables but the sumproduct worked.

I had tried a sumproduct but I see now that I put it together wrong.

thanks again!
