Ie:daily usage is mixed and can vary from zero to 1000 I cant work out how to automatically show negative or positive % variance from a median number (Say 470)

I admit i struggle with excel and come to you with hope that you can help.
I have searched online and much of it does not even say if it is number, general or percentage that needs to be selected. I dont know so i try everything, i know tragic!! Thanks in advance for any help.

Excel Facts

Copy formula down without changing references
If you have =SUM(F2:F49) in F50; type Alt+' in F51 to copy =SUM(F2:F49) to F51, leaving the formula in edit mode. Change SUM to COUNT.
Put todays figure in A1. Your number 470 in B1. Then:

=(A1-B1)/B1

Format to %.

Steve, Hit with a curve ball here. Formula works great but won’t allow drag down column. Example A1 is 285-B1 is 470/ B1 answer is Minus 39% (Correct) A2 is 321-B2 is 470/B2 answer is Minus 32% (Correct) Actuals for A3 is 315, A4 is 442, and A5 is 604. Should give answers of -33%, -6%, +29% Try dragging formula down the column for A3 gives answer of-264475% (Although Format % zero % points) A4 gives answer of -371064% and A5 shows as -179771% If I put formula in as a single entry it gives the correct answer, so any ideas as to how this has got wonky would be really handy round about now Steve? Thanks, Frank I could eventually put formula into each cell but what a pain! So I was premature in thinking i was out of the woods Such is life!

Steve: Thanks for your help. I have solved my dragging down of formulae problem. I chose % format and had used =(Q512-V506)/V506 which accurately gave 39% as answer. The reason it would not drag the right % down was because i had not made required cells Absolute =(Q512-$V$506)/$V$506 works like a charm. Thanks for waking up my grey cells, you have a lovely day, hey dream big? a lovely life? :) Frank
