Hello,

I would like to create a drop down list and I have learned how to insert it using Data, Data Validation then choosing List and typing in my list item. However, I would like to add an option that allows me to type an item that is not in the pre-populated list. Is this possible? I have read that I need to go to the Developer tab and then Visual Basic and create code. However, after the words 'developer tab' I have zero understanding so hope there is an easy alternative.

Thank you,
Tracy

When defining the validity of data, quite often we look only at the first tab (Settings) of the form window. Once approved, validation does not allow anything else that is defined. But as you look at the third tab, in the combo Style you select Warning or Information, the mechanism will allow you to enter a different value than what was previously defined.

@tbhoola Welcome.
Hopefully you do not need to resort to Visual Basic.
If you Select your dv cell > Go to Data > Data validation > select Error Alert tab
Style. >.Warning
Title > "Just Checking"
Error Message >. "Are you sure you wish to enter an option that is not on the list?"

OK
