So in my example, in column A, I would like to look up the letter "B", and then look under the month of January, and sum up the number of "B"'s that is returned under that column. I just want the one row for the sum of B's. I dont want to have multiple cells that I still have to solve for, and I dont want to hide cells. Under the Cell for B, I might want to look up the Number of any letter in a particular month.

Does that make sense?

Thanks

Lawrence

Excel Facts

Using Function Arguments with nested formulas
If writing INDEX in Func. Arguments, type MATCH(. Use the mouse to click inside MATCH in the formula bar. Dialog switches to MATCH.
Is this what you mean?
If not, please provide & explain the expected results for the sample data given.

BTW, You will get many more potential helpers if you post a small (copyable) screen shot or two directly in your post, rather than an image where the data cannot be pasted into Excel in a meaningful way. My signature block below has help regarding that.

Formula in B10 is copied across and down.
