MS Word question

Hi ,
Just out of interest , I have a Word document that we use for the specific purpose of recording sent out radios. When the document is used it is required to have a Ref number. Currently the reference number gets noted on a sheet so that the next time the document is used we know what the following reference number will be.
I was wondering if anyone knows of a Macro or code that will insert a reference number into the document and when saved increment this by 1 the next time the document is opened.
Hopefully this makes sence...
