Transcript of the video:
Hey, welcome back to the MrExcel netcast.
I'm Bill Jelen.
I'm sure you're saying yourself, what the heck is he doing?
He's holding a baseball bat, I was down in Louisville last week.
I did a seminar there.
I just got a great gift from the client nice Louisville slugger bat customized, personalized with Bill MrExcel Jelen.
Isn't that cool?
I want to talk about a couple of websites here and one of them is actually related to Louisville.
The first one has been up for a couple of weeks, but I didn't bother to tell anyone about it until right now.
If you go mrexcel.com/excel_video_training.html, the first six hundred podcast are here.
I know that iTunes only keeps to get the last 50 or 75 episodes and if you haven't been around since the beginning, it's frankly hard to find these.
Well, this is one web page has everything and then when you go in we have a flash viewer there you can watch the the video right from Google video.
So, that's cool.
Now, the Louisville related site, I was so happy with that bat that I went through and I created a cool video of my favorite 12 or 15 tips from the entire seminar.
So, this is out here and uploaded it for the folks in Louisville, but then I said well wait a second. This is pretty cool let me take the Louisville part off the front and just put it out for everyone.
So, if you go to mrexcel.com/video2003.html.
It's about six and a half minutes shows off 12 or 15 tips page numbers there where you can look it up in the book and of course a link at the bottom where you can get the e-book for free I also created an Excel 2007 version of this in case you've updated to Excel 2007.
So, I know you're watching the podcast, but you have co-workers who could probably stand to see some cool Excel tips rather than send with a page with six hundred episodes, which is overwhelming just have them watch this one six minute video, and they'll become much smarter about Microsoft Excel. Okay.
Now, finally the excel tip for today I want to talk about frustration with Data Validation and we're going to talk about the frustration today and ask for your ideas, but then tomorrow I'll show you the best thing that I could come up with.
So, we're talking about Data Validation this is a list of valid answers here, and it's easy to create that list as a drop down in the cell.
We go to Data, Validation and say instead of allowing any value we want to allow a list and say that our list is over here in H2 to H10 We have in cell drop down as one of the choices, click OK.
And sure enough as soon as we enter that cell we get a drop down, but here's the frustrating thing unlike every other drop down that's ever existed in windows.
We can't type the first letter of the answer to get to that item.
You would think that I'd be able to type a B and have Excel automatically jump down to that item , but it just simply doesn't work with the Data Validation.
Someone wrote to me with a frustration saying hey, the people using a spreadsheet really want to be able to type the first few letters and have it get close.
Man it just simply won't do that.
So, if you have a good workaround for this, let me know tomorrow we'll take a look at how to create a quick user forum to solve the problem.
Well, thanks for stopping by and don't forget to tell your co-workers about the great video 2003.html site.
And we'll see you next time for another netcast form MrExcel.
