Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast.
I'm Bill Jelen.
This is episode number 498.
I want to invite you to make sure to listen on this Thursday for episode number 500.
We take a page from Leo and deck Divar Tillow with their daily giz wiz podcast.
Every time they get to a milestone, they give away a treasure trove of prizes, So, we'll have great stuff to give away on Thursday.
You want to make sure to watch that.
And today we have a question that was asked in one of the recent power excel seminars I did.
Someone said, "they have a series of dates and Sales for each day and they want to create both a Running total and a Running average" Now the Running total, I think most people will just simply create a simple Formula.
Here in cell C3, three of that says we're going to take the previous running total plus the sales from today.
And we can copy that formula down by double clicking.
The Running Average though is a little bit trickier because we basically, want to create a reference.
That's both fixed and Relative.
So, we want to use the average command.
=AVERAGE and in this first cell, we're going to average from B$2 That says always start at the top of the range and then a colon and we're going to B2 without the dollar sign.
That's an interesting Formula.
In the first part of the Range will always be stuck at B2 but as we copy that down, let's take a look down here at the bottom.
You'll see that it now goes from B2 to B13.
And basically, it's only averaging the Sales above it.
So you can see a Running Average as you go.
Great question that came in.
Hey, thanks for stopping by for episode number 498.
We'll see you next time for another netcast from MrExcel.
