Do you notice that in Excel 97-2003, if you have a really long formula in row 1, when you select a cell, the formula bar obscures the value in the cell? This is now fixed in Excel 2007. Episode 411 shows you how.

Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast, I'm Bill Jelen.
Today is a 2007 Thursday, so we're going to talk about some of the new features in Excel 2007.
I'm going to start out here in Excel 2003, just to show something that's really annoying.
I have a very long formula in cell D1 and it happens to be in row 1.
If I happen to go up and select that formula, you'll see that the formula shows in the formula bar and the formula bar has to automatically extend and stretch, and covers the number in cell D1.
So I can't see both, the formula and the formula bar at the same time.
Just kind of one of those really annoying things, if you use really long formulas at the top of your spreadsheet.
They've completely fixed this in Excel 2007.
Let me switch over to excel 2007, I have a big long formula here in cell H1 and you'll see that in the formula bar I don't see the entire formula.
I just see one line at the time, I can choose to scroll a single line up or down, or over here, on the right hand side, to hit the Expand Formula Bar, which is also Ctrl+Shift+U and it will now expand the formula bar.
But what's very nice, as it moves the grid down, so even though the formula is long and normally would obscure my cell, the grid is moved down so I continue to see both, the value and the formula at the same time.
Well, what a really simple fix, but something that will completely eliminate one of those annoyances, that has been dogging us in Excel.
Actually, since Excel ‘97 we've had this kind of problem.
Hey, thanks for stopping by, we’ll see you tomorrow for another netcast from MrExcel.
