Modifying a Data Model in PowerPivot

Hello,

When attempting to modify an existing data model query in PowerPivot my expectation would be that one could simply go to Table Properties in Design, click the design button in the Edit Table Properties window and get the same drag-and-drop user interface that was available when creating the initial query. However, usually it doesn't appear; instead the Table Import Wizard only allows entering an MDX query.

When I have tried to modify the query with MDX, although it is validated, the end result of saving those changes is to complete upend the original query table contents, eliminating whatever Measurements are included and creating new columns at the right that that appear to be just copies of the original columns in the data model. All of this renders the original data model useless.

Can anyone tell me:

1) Why a direct modification of the MDX is causing this result.
2) How can I avoid that while maintaining my original data model table or fix PowerPivot so I always get the drag-and-drop interface.
3) If creating an entire new query is the only choice, how can pivot tables using the PowerPivot data model be redirected to the new query?

I have search all over the internet and Mr. Excel, but have yet to see a solution for this issue. The Board's help would be greatly appreciated.

Can a formula spear through sheets?
Use =SUM(January:December!E7) to sum E7 on all of the sheets from January through December
Generally, as long as you never go manually edit a query, it stays in happy wizardy mode. But once you are out, you are out for good.

And... there is no easy way to "fix" this, that I have found. It's much like re-pointing a table from a csv to sql... it's just not supported directly, you pretty much have to redo it.

And if you do re-import the table, you will have to manually move any measures, relationships, calc columns. Sorry there is no better news here.
