Access form design view used to have a vertical bar on the left-hand side where I could click and drag to select objects. However it has suddenly gone missing. How can I get it back? Thank you

You are probably looking for the navigation pane.
In Access 2013 it is under file | options | current database | navigation -- check box for show navigation pane.

It's different from Access 2003 and took me a while to get used to but it does the job.
